Morro Bay
Located approximately 17 miles south of
Cambria, the Morro Bay area is known for its natural beauty and is a
Globally Important Bird
Area on the Pacific Flyway.
Morro Bay's landmark
is Morro Rock, a volcanic peak over 21 million years old. This
576-foot-high dome-shaped formation now serves as a preserve for the
endangered peregrine falcons that nest in its crevices. As a bird
sanctuary, Morro Bay provides a beneficial habitat to more than 250
species. Dozens of Festival
events appeal to all birders and to visitors interested in Morro Bay, a
designated national and state estuary. The return of wintering birds to
Morro Bay, California, is celebrated each year at the Morro Bay Winter
Bird Festival, held over the Martin Luther King Holiday Weekend. Birders
spotted
213 species
during the January 2004 Festival.
The
Morro Bay Natural
History Museum, located in
Morro Bay State Park, includes engaging exhibits, informative lectures,
and a hands-on discovery area for children; nature walks are conducted
on a regular basis.
