Sea Otter Inn is a Moonstone Beach hotel that puts you on Moonstone Beach Drive itself, an easy walk to the sand, with a heated pool and spa open year-round, pet-friendly rooms for dogs of any size, and ocean-view patios looking straight out at the Pacific.
How Close Is Sea Otter Inn to Moonstone Beach?
Close enough that a car never has to leave the lot. Our rooms sit along Moonstone Beach Drive, and the beach access points and the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk are a short walk from our door. The boardwalk runs about 2.85 miles round trip along the bluff, trailhead to turnaround and back, past wind-bent cypress trees, tide pools, and a long open run of coastline where you can usually spot otters and seals. Walk the wooden planks or drop down onto the sand itself at any of the marked access points, and the path is wheelchair-friendly for most of its length, with free parking at the trailhead off Highway 1.
Book an Ocean View King, and you get that same view without leaving your patio (or bed).
Is Sea Otter Inn a Pet-Friendly Hotel in Cambria?
Yes! Dogs stay in select beachfront rooms for $35 a night, up to two pets per room. One detail worth knowing before you pack the leash: Moonstone Beach itself sits inside the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, so dogs aren't allowed down on that stretch of sand, check out Visit Cambria's four-legged-friends guide for details. The boardwalk above it is a different story, and leashed dogs are welcome on the full length of the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk. A short drive south adds Fiscalini Ranch Preserve to the list, where the Marine Terrace Trail allows leashed dogs alongside hikers and cyclists on its own stretch of bluff.
Is the Pool Open All Year at Sea Otter Inn?
It is. Our outdoor pool and spa stay open year-round, including through the foggy Cambria winters. We've filled the deck around the spa with planter boxes of flowers, and it's turned into the spot where guests tend to linger after a day on the boardwalk instead of heading straight back to their rooms.
Full amenity details, including the EV charging stations and the wine, gift, and apparel shop we keep stocked in our lobby, live on our amenities page. The shop is an indoor stop, not an outdoor stand, so it's there on foggy mornings as much as clear afternoons.
What Else Is Within Reach of the Inn?
Hearst Castle sits about 10 miles up Highway 1 in neighboring San Simeon, roughly a 15-minute drive, which makes it an easy half-day trip without eating too far into your beach time. Closer to home, the Bluff Trail at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve is fully ADA-accessible and gives you a flatter, quieter alternative to the boardwalk if you'd rather scan the water for whales than count cypress trees.
In the evening, our fire pits, including one with a glass windscreen that keeps the flame going through the coastal breeze, are open to any guest who wants to sit outside after dinner or even enjoy their morning breakfast basket by the fire.
Cambria's weather runs cooler and foggier than most Central Coast postcards suggest, especially in the mornings, and that's part of the draw rather than a downside. A marine layer over the boardwalk at 7am tends to burn off by late morning, leaving a window of clear afternoon light that photographs better than anything we could stage. Pack a layer you can shed, because the same jacket that feels necessary at sunrise is usually unnecessary by lunch.
Which Room Should You Book?
Traveling with family or a group of friends, the King, 2 Queen Ocean View Patio room is our newest and largest, sleeping up to six with a private patio and a set of Adirondack chairs facing the water. Couples tend to land in the Ocean View King or the King Suite, both finished in warm coastal decor with a seating area for mornings when nobody feels like leaving the room at all. Guests who want a little separate space for kids often choose the Two Queen Patio, which sleeps four and keeps its own outdoor area, and our Accessible King is built for guests who need step-free access without giving up the patio.
Check current rates and availability for any of these room types, and if you book direct, you get our best rate plus a complimentary breakfast basket delivered to your door each morning. Book your stay on our direct booking page to lock in the best rate and the breakfast basket in one step.
